Day Seven
Today, I finally began the “outreach” component of my project. Now that the interviews were complete, I began to focus on publicizing my findings and fundraising.
I began the process by setting up a GoFundMe. The first step was, of course, to figure out where I wanted the proceeds to go. I decided that I would split all funds I raised equally between the three organizations who had allowed me to interview them. I also set a placeholder goal of $500 (however, I enabled the setting in which this value changes depending on how the initiative is going).
Additionally, I looked over my project checklist for any specifications about how to set up the online fundraiser. One of the things that I’d emphasized was writing the perfect, attention-grabbing pitch — the intent being that anyone on the platform would be drawn in and encouraged to donate. The way to achieve this goal was to be unique, to include a component that not many people would have on their fundraisers: my interviews. I skimmed my interview transcripts and picked out a quote that I found both relevant and impactful, then put it in bold at the top of my pitch. Hopefully, it will catch attention and attract potential donors! (If you are interested in contributing, please visit this website: https://www.gofundme.com/f/living-rare-donate-to-rare-disease-nonprofits! Thank you!)
While the pitch is a crucial component of gathering support, I know it won’t be enough. To truly maximize donations, I need to promote my fundraiser both through my personal social circles (friends, family, school, etc.) and publicly (social media and this website). For the remainder of this project, I will get the word out in whatever ways I can. I’m excited to begin that process tomorrow!
